About Us

A Children's Habitat was founded in 1972 by a group of parents who had read the works of groundbreaking early childhood educator Maria Montessori and were determined to bring her unique Montessori Method to their children in Indianapolis. Over the years, our program at A Children's Habitat has expanded from serving a handful of Indy children to offering two morning Montessori preschool classes, a toddler program, as well as kindergarten and extended day programs.

What makes A Children's Habitat unique is our low student teacher rations and extraordinary teaching staff. The pictures scattered throughout this website of children working so independently might give some the impression that the teachers in a Montessori classroom are not very important. Nothing is further from the truth. It takes enormous talent, insight, and training on the part of Montessori teachers to achieve that effortless blending-into-the-background appearance. Our teachers walk through the classroom offering gentle guidance, helping a child who has become unfocused find something else to focus on, demonstrating to another child how a particular set of materials is used, always monitoring what each child is working on so that the next day she can add more material that the children are ready for and remove othes they've tired of. The teachers spend many, many out-of-class hours preparing the classrooms to make them as engaging as possible for each student.

You are welcome to schedule a visit to A Children's Habitat so you can see for yourself how gifted our teachers are at their work. Our excellent teachers work extremely hard to bring Maria Montessori's method to life in our classrooms. And unlike many Indianapolis-area schools that go by the label "Montessori", we make sure that each of our morning preschool (ages 2.5-6) classrooms is led by a teacher who has been certified by the American Montessori Society.

Because A Children's Habitat is a parent-run school, parents have a strong voice in shaping their children's education. Our Board of Directors is made up entirely of parents, and most parents participate in running the school school through committees or by volunteering in the classroom.
